Cremation Offers Many Options

Cremation services, like burial services, look different from one family to the next, but always provide a meaningful way to honor a deceased loved one. We work with families to ensure cremation services that are in line with their beliefs, values, and wishes. We also provide family members with different options for preserving and honoring the cremated remains of their loved one—including urns, Columbariums, cremation grave markers, and more.

Choosing cremation is a deeply personal decision, and there are several factors involved, including religious beliefs, personal budget, final wishes and pre-planned arrangements. For a lot of cultures and faiths, viewing the body of the deceased is an important part of the funeral ritual. However, many people mistakenly believe that when they choose cremation, a traditional visitation with viewing becomes impossible. In fact, cremation can increase your options, including choosing to have visitation at our funeral home, or place of worship (if permitted) with your loved one’s body present for viewing. There is no one-size-fits all solution because each farewell is as one of a kind as the life being celebrated. And our professional staff has the experience you need in planning and executing every aspect of the services you desire.

Cremation should not be considered a substitute for a funeral; it is simply a choice for the final disposition of a loved one. If you are considering cremation, here are some of the choices available for you:

Cremation Service Options: In general, there are six types of cremation services, and our staff will help you choose which is right for you.

1.  Funeral Visitation (also called Wake) followed by Cremation: Most often held at the funeral home, is a time when friends and family members gather together to honor and remember their loved one. The body is present and the casket is open or closed according to the family's wishes. The funeral is normally the next day followed by cremation.

2.  Memorial Visitation after Cremation: Commonly held at the funeral home, but can be held virtually anywhere, is a time when friends and family members gather together to honor and remember their loved one after the cremation has taken place. While the body is not present, the cremated cremains most commonly are. Because the body has already been cremated, a memorial service can be held at any time after the death, from days, to weeks or a year…there are no time constraints.

3.  Church Service, or Other House of Worship, followed by Cremation: Commonly known as a Funeral Mass or Religious Service, where the body is present. The cremation usually follows immediately after.

4.  Church Service, or Other House of Worship, after Cremation: Commonly known as a Memorial Mass or Religious Memorial Service, with (or if you choose, without) the cremated cremains present.

5.  Graveside Service: Most often a funeral service or memorial service will include a graveside service, although some people choose to solely have a graveside service. This is usually a brief prayer service at the graveside when cremated cremains are being interred or entombed in a cemetery.

6.  Direct Cremation: This type of service is where the body is cremated and the cremains are returned to the family without any type of service.

Whatever your personal choices are, the compassionate and knowledgeable professions at Donohue Cecere Funeral Directors will guide you through every step of the decision making process, making sure that you choose what is best for you, your loved one and your family. And you can rest assured that our unparalleled service and support continues long after your loved one’s service has ended. Please contact us to discuss these options further.

What is Cremation?

During the cremation process, intense heat reduces human remains to their original elements. Our trained staff will bring your loved one to the crematory in a cremation container. Following cremation, we will receive the cremated remains and place them into an urn that has been selected by the family. There are several options a family has in the final disposition of the remains at this point, including:

  • Ceremonial Scattering – Gulf or other place of importance
  • Home Memorialization
  • Inurnment – Burial or Niche
