Rev Msgr. John Martin

Monsignor Martin passed away peacefully in his sleep on the eve of September 8, 2021 having been progressively weakened by various illnesses.

Born in Harlem, New York, Father Martin was raised in City Line Brooklyn in the parish of Saint Sylvester's. Educated by the Charities of Halifax, he entered the minor seminary of Saint Mary's College in Kentucky and completed his seminary training at Saint Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, New York.
After ordination in June of 1961, he served as an associate pastor in Saint Joseph's in East Patchogue and Cure of Ars in Merrick. In 1964 he was assigned to the faculty of Saint Pius X in Uniondale where he taught American History. In 1971 he served the diocese as director of vocations and worked in the apostolate of Christian Awakening. In the mid-seventies he pioneered the diaconate program for our diocese and helped in the formation of deacons until 1980.
In 1980, Monsignor served as administrator of Sacred Hearts Church in Southampton and was soon made pastor of Saint Edward's in Syosset. In 1990 he became pastor of Saint Thomas in West Hempstead. In 1998 he co-pastored Holy Spirit Church with Father Tony. His final assignment in the diocese was in 2001 as pastor of Notre Dame, New Hyde Park.
After retirement in 2007, Father helped in many pastoral assignments - most recently for the last seven years here at Saint Brigid's.
Father is predeceased by his father Peter, his mother Marion, his sisters Marilyn and Lorraine.
