Dr. Maria Jesus Hostin

Maria of Westbury, NY, passed away from COVID on January 1, 2021, at the age of 78, just one week after her 78th birthday. Born and raised in the town of Almazán in Soria, Spain, she completed her education in Madrid, Spain before spending the majority of her later life in New York. Devoted wife to Emmanuel, who also recently succumbed to COVID. Adored mother to Emmanuel (wife Asunción), Helen, Carlos (partner Casey Tierney). Loving grandmother to Dyoe, Gabriel, and Paloma. Cherished sister to Ana Maria López López de Ocariz, Fe Ena Victoria López López de Ocariz, and Beatrice López López de Ocariz. After attending elementary and secondary school in Soria, Maria completed medical school in Madrid. While there, she met her husband of 51 years. They married in 1969 and had their eldest child, Emmanuel, in 1970, before they traveled together to Queens, New York, to continue a beautiful life together. She completed her residency training in anesthesia at Brookdale Hospital in the late 1970s and spent the majority of her distinguished career at Franklin General Hospital in Franklin Square. In recent years, she volunteered to provide literacy training as well as childcare services for the underserved bilingual community near her home in Westbury. She had a love for the game of tennis which she played as often as she was able. She worked alongside her husband, Emmanuel, to build a community center in Haiti in honor of her beloved mother-in-law Helene Gaston. Together, they also enjoyed traveling, especially to her native Spain, exploring different cultures and cuisine, and spending time with their grandchildren. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2019 at a mass and reception at St. Brigid’s Church. She will be missed for her incredibly giving spirit, her vigor and energy, and her loving nature.

Due to COVID restrictions, her funeral and burial will be held for family members only.
Strict COVID precautions will be followed, including the wearing of face masks, social distancing, and temperature screening at the door.
The funeral services will be live streamed on the St. Brigid Church website- link will be provided.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date
