John (Gerlando) J. Maria treasured husband, father, and grandfather left us peacefully on April 26th, 2023 at the age of 71. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 21, 1951 to Joseph and Mary Maria as of the oldest of three children including a younger sister, Rosalie, and the youngest brother, Carl. The family moved to Richmond Hill, Queens when John was fifteen where he lived until he met the love of his life, Ann Mullady, while attending college. After school he entered a long and successful thirty five year career in service to his country as a National Import Specialist for the United States Treasury Department.
John and Ann were married on May 17th, 1975 and began their life together in Brooklyn, New York where they had two children, Joseph and Thomas. Shortly they moved their family moved to Westbury, Long Island where they could raise their children in the safety of the suburbs while still remaining close to their parents, since security and family were priorities in John’s life.
He was a steadfast in his work and in his faith, someone who could be counted on. John was a passionate learner and achiever, the first in his immediate family to attend college and also a handball champion during his college years. He was a spiritual man serving his Catholic faith as an altar boy in his youth and remained faithful throughout his life. He enjoyed physical fitness, music, reading, and a was self taught handy man around the house. Most of all he was known for his generosity and sharp and clever sense of humor that quickly endeared others to him. He was also a devoted grandfather to his four grandchildren who will miss him dearly as all those who knew him. He is preceded by his brother, Carl Maria, and survived by his sister, Rosalie McNay.
