Florence Elizabeth Paul Galloway was born in Jacksonville, Florida on June 7th, 1933. She was raised by her parents Mary Lou and Ivory Harrell in Waycross, GA. At an early age she professed her faith and became a baptized member of the First Baptist Church, in Waycross, GA. Mrs. Galloway was a graduate of Albany State University in Albany, GA. She advanced her education by receiving a Masters degree from New York University, NY. She also attained a graduate degree in Educational Leadership from Hofstra University, NY. Florence was an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
In 1954, she was united in holy matrimony to James Sylvester Galloway. A union that lasted for some 63 years, until James’s passing in 2018. This union was blessed with two children Darrell Bethay and Beth Jeanine.
In 1968, Florence relocated with her family to Westbury NY. She began her career as an Elementary School teacher in the Hempstead Public Schools District and served as a school principal in the district for several years. She later became the Executive Director of the Early Childhood Development Programs of Hempstead Public Schools. She dedicated much of her life’s work to the education and advancement of children; and her motto was “It isn’t about us, it’s about the children”.
Mrs. Galloway received numerous awards in recognition of her achievements and excellence during the course of her career including:
·New York State Board of Regents – Teacher of the Year
·Hempstead Public Schools Board of Trustees – Educator of the Year
·Council of Administrators and Supervisors – Award of Outstanding Leadership
·State of New York – Executive Chamber: Certificate of Merit
·Hempstead NAACP Branch – Education Award for Innovative Programming
Florence had a presence and spirit that would uplift everyone she met. Florence had an eye for fashion and always looked her best for every occasion. She was truly a Diva & Fashionista. She had a love for entertaining & decorating and always knew how to host any occasion. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she would decorate her home during the holiday in the joyous spirit that would celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus.
Her legacy will forever be cherished through her loved ones and the many children that she taught and loved. Florence leaves behind her son Darrell, daughter in law Elizabeth; her grandchildren Darrien Joel and Jarrett James. Her extended family Deana, Duane Jr, Michael and a host of family and friends.
