Esmeralda "Emmy" Santiago

October 24, 1949 ~ October 22, 2021 (age 71)

The Life of Emmy Santiago
Esmeralda, “Emmy” Santiago was born in Manhattan, New York (Spanish Harlem) on October
24, 1949. Her father, Rafael Latony and her mother, Gloria Martinez, were both born in Puerto Rico
. She was their only child. At the early age of 10, Emmy, her mother and maternal grandmother
moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn where she would live for the next 40+ years. During those years she
attended Intermediate School and Eli Whitney High School where she met and married Jose
Santiago. Together they had 3 beautiful children, Jessica, born in 1971 and twins, Marcus & Brenda
born in 1973. Emmy received her associates degree in business from Baruch College. She worked for
various companies throughout her career as an administrative secretary. She eventually retired from the
NYC Department of Education as a personnel secretary. Esmeralda came from a large extended
family which she adored. There was no shortage of aunts, uncles and cousins. During her lifetime she
also made and nurtured many friendships. Emmy touched the lives of so many who encountered her wit,
sense of humor, encouraging spirit, confidence, love of life and food, (hold the pepper). Emmy came to
a saving knowledge of The Lord Jesus Christ in the early 80’s. She attended the Brooklyn Tabernacle
with her 3 children for over 15 years. She enjoyed singing in the 250 voice choir and had many wonderful
memories of choir trips and special events at church. Later on she would serve at The Lighthouse
Church under her son-in-law, Hector and daughter Jessica. She had a great faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ and loved sharing her faith with others. She was instrumental in bringing many to know the
Lord. She was blessed with 5 handsome grandsons, (Cameron, Leighton, Chandler, Jaiden and
Gavin) whom she adored! Emmy loved her family, sacrificing and giving generously with all of her
heart. Family gatherings, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and friends were her fondest
moments. Emmy’s last mission on Earth was the loving care of her mom who lived with her until the
Lord took her home at 92 years old. Emmy leaves behind a legacy of faith and will be greatly missed,
forever etched in our hearts!
