Edward J. Berrell

December 21, 1927 ~ March 27, 2024 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Tribute

Edward Berrell, a man of many roles and accomplishments, departed from this world surrounded by his large and loving family on March 27, 2024. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Eleanore, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage, and their children Carolyn, Christine and her husband Thomas, Timothy and his wife Susan, Matthew and his wife Barbara, and Elizabeth and her husband Christopher. He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren. His son Stephen preceded him in passing in 2011.

Edward was born in Queens, NY, in 1927 to Irish immigrants Daniel and Catherine (Lynch) Berrell. He was the youngest of four children including, Frank, Catherine and Daniel. He was not only a family man but also an accomplished engineer, contributing significantly to the Grumman Lunar Excursion Module project for NASA. His name, along with his team’s, is etched on the moon as a testament to their work. Edward was a man who loved to fix things, spending countless hours disassembling and repairing items, only to wrap them back up and store them for someday.
A veteran of both WWII, serving as a Merchant Marine, and the Korean War in the U.S. Army, Edward was a true patriot. He held the rank of Captain in the Civil Air Patrol and was a pilot with his own fleet of planes. He was also a small business owner, aiding his community during the energy crisis of the late 70s and early 80s by selling kerosene heaters in his Westbury storefront.
Edward had a deep love for nature, spending as much time as possible at the families  cherished mountain house in Warren, CT. There, he would call to the foxes and owls from his back porch, immersing himself in the flora and fauna around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated in memory of Edward J. Berrell to:
