Thomas Davis, Jr.

November 2, 1931 ~ February 17, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Thomas Davis, Jr. was born November 2, 1931 to Pearl and Thomas Davis, Sr. and was the only son of four children, all who were born in Harlem, New York. This is the area which was referred to as “Sugar Hill”. His three sisters, Mary Miller, Thomasine Coles and Leona Scudder, have all predeceased him. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the United State Air Force where he became a champion boxer. After being honorably discharged, he went on to become a two-time Golden Gloves Boxing Champion.

Thomas met and married Nancy A. Davis, who was also from the Sugar Hill section of Harlem, NY. They were married for 60 years and family was always what mattered most. They moved to Westbury, NY in 1958 where they purchased their first home at 564 Broadway. That year they became the proud parents of their first child, Deborah, followed by a son Jeffrey in 1962 and then their youngest child, Leslie in 1963. They then moved to 394 King St. where his legacy began. Thomas strove to make sure his family had the best of everything, and dinner was served by 6PM and everyone was in attendance. Family breaking bread together at one table was the center of his life, and holidays were always spent at home with family.

Thomas studied at Adelphi University in the evenings and graduated as an accountant while he worked at NMU Welfare & Pension and Vacation Plans. He retired at the age of 55 and enjoyed sharing his expertise with his community by doing everyone’s Income Taxes. Thomas became a licensed Real Estate Broker and worked at Parkview Reality on Maple Ave. in Westbury where he was instrumental in helping many of the residents of Westbury purchase their homes.

Thomas served two terms as President of the NAACP Westbury Branch and as President of the Catholic Interracial Council for St. Brigid’s RC Church. He also served as head usher for 40 years at the 11:30AM service where he greeted everyone with his smile. Thomas made sure his children were at Mass every week and enrolled them in St. Brigid’s Our Lady of Hope Regional School in Westbury. He was a devoutly religious man who loved God. He will be remembered for his kindness and his willingness to always be there to help someone in need. He showed love to his “extended” family of sons and daughters who were always a part of his family life.

Thomas passed away on February 17, 2017 and is predeceased by his wife Nancy. He is survived by his children Jeffrey T. Davis and his sons Thomas Davis IV and Jael Davis, Leslie F. Davis and her sons Marquis M. Louard, Michael G. Davis II, Matthew V. Davis, the late Deborah A. Hutchinson and her daughters Duana A. Hutchinson, Diana A. Guess, and Kamaria Steele, along with his “Great Grands” Steven A. Guess III, Antonio X. Guess, Pheobe Bumbury and Michael Bumbury as well as his nieces Elvena Scudder, Antoinette Scudder, Denise Fomby, and nephews Raymond Scudder, Michael Scudder, Harry Coles, and Dennis Coles and many other family members who will remember, cherish and love him always.
