John Anthony Wesp Jr.

John A. Wesp Jr, 77,  son of John A. Wesp Sr and Jane A. Wesp, sadly passed away on April 10th, 2024 in Sebastian, FL.

John married his wife of 54 years, Kathleen, in December of 1969 in New York. He worked for 26 years as a high school math teacher on Long Island, NY (retired at 52). John enjoyed planning, traveling, playing bridge, and boating. He loved being in the company of others and sharing stories, especially about family heritage and recipes. John enjoyed seeing his grandchildren grow and watching them enjoy their passions. 

During their summers off from teaching, John and Kathleen made 14 consecutive camping trips out west and visited many national parks in the United States.  Later, trading camping out west for summers on Cape Cod, and sailing ‘Deuxieme Amour’ on Pleasant Bay, the Cape and islands. The family joined Chatham Yacht Club in 1987 and John dedicated his talents to the yacht club for over 15 years. In retirement he spent summers boating on Pleasant Bay, playing bridge, helping and entertaining his friends, traveling the world on cruises, and camping in his Airstream. John and Kathleen circumnavigated the world at least four times, cruised on all seven seas and stood on all seven continents, including Antarctica. John was very outgoing and always making new friends on his adventures. Each of these friends would always be invited to join him on his next adventures, all while enjoying a glass of scotch, offering a haircut and his many opinions. 

To know John is to love John.

John’s legacy lives on in his wife Kathleen, his children Bartholomew (Heather) Wesp, Daniel (Mindy) Wesp, Mary Catherine (Jack) Retman, his grandchildren Maximilian, Alexander, Zachariah, Valerie, Owen, Jane and Mackenzie, and his brother Richard (Marianne) Wesp.

A funeral service will be held at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Westbury, NY on Friday April 19, 2024 at 11:00 am as well as a memorial mass at St. Sebastian Church, Sebastian, FL in the future.
